How to Choose the Right Vacuum
Filtration Systems
HEPA Filtration: High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters capture 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. Essential for allergy sufferers and homes with pets. Look for True HEPA or HEPA-sealed systems for maximum effectiveness.
Cyclonic Filtration: Uses centrifugal force to separate dirt and debris without losing suction. Common in bagless models. May require more frequent filter cleaning but eliminates the cost of replacement bags.
Multi-Stage Filtration: Combines multiple filter types (foam, felt, HEPA) to capture particles of different sizes. Provides comprehensive air cleaning and protects the motor.
Suction Power Explained
Air Watts (AW): The true measure of cleaning power, combining airflow and suction. Higher isn't always better - match power to your needs:
- 50-100 AW: Robot and handheld vacuums - adequate for hard floors and light debris
- 100-200 AW: Standard uprights - good for most homes with mixed flooring
- 200+ AW: Premium models - excellent for deep carpet cleaning and pet hair
Floor Type Compatibility
Carpets: Look for strong suction (180+ AW), rotating brush rolls, and adjustable height settings. Upright vacuums typically perform best on carpets.
Hard Floors: Soft brush rolls or no brush (suction only) prevent scratching. Canister vacuums excel on hardwood, tile, and laminate.
Mixed Flooring: Choose models with automatic floor detection or manual brush roll on/off switches. Cordless stick vacuums offer excellent versatility.
